Fire safety upgrade for energy supply

Ferm Engineering has completed a detailed fire safety construction plan for the Stanwell Power Station, outside Rockhampton in central Queensland.

Ferm will now be part of a four-year project to upgrade fire safety systems for the station’s four turbines.

Ferm spent almost five months mapping the complex construction plans from scratch, covering “every nut, bolt and pipe link” for each turbine. The fire safety upgrade will include new sprinkler systems to ensure the turbines are well protected with state-of-the-art fire technologies.

Stanwell Power will manage tenders for the work, which Ferm will oversee as the fire services adviser.

With capacity to generate 1,460 megawatts, Stanwell provides energy for central Queensland and supports the National Electricity Market, which supplies energy across five states and the Australian Capital Territory. The station came online in 1996.

Ferm Engineering was selected to prepare the Stanwell plans after the success of its fire safety upgrade at the Diamantina Power Station, the primary power supplier for far north Queensland’s Mt Isa region.

CEO Steve Burton said Ferm has the capability to deliver fire services design, supply and certification from concept to completion to satisfy market demands in all Australian states and territories, from the smallest systems to the largest.
