Project Overview
A challenge to increase accommodation capacity of the existing Wacol youth facility and not to compromise the children’s safety. The project lead by AE Smith was partnered with Ferm Engineering to integrate an air conditioning upgrade to the detention blocks and install added beds to the cells.
The system modelling and smoke management systems were developed and approved with the Department’s welfare team. The systems were hot smoke tested with training to on-site staff, to demonstrate the evacuation methods and safety regime to be implemented. The improvement to hot summer days and fire safety were achieved and the systems represent state of the art for youth protection in the industry for occupants in detention with in difficult behavioural situations.
